Meet Rían and Míde

Meet Rían and Míde, our majestic Irish Wolfhounds. These gentle giants are a living link to Ireland’s past, as they once played a vital role in the country’s history.

Bred for their imposing stature and strength, Irish Wolfhounds were historically used in hunting and as war dogs by the ancient Celts. In medieval times, they were highly prized and often given as gifts to royalty across Europe. Irish folklore is rich with tales of these magnificent dogs, and they are often associated with legendary heroes and nobility.

At Knappogue Castle, residents have the unique opporunity to take these magnificent creatures for a walk under the watchful eye of our estate farmer. Learn of the history, heritage and legends associated with these unique and gentle giants. 

Wolfhounds were regular guests at the Knappogue Castle Medieval Banquets in the 1960’s & would roam the Banquet Hall as would have been the custom in medieval times.
